Like Macau, Zhuhai is an hour's ferry ride from Hong Kong across the mouth of the Peral river and fits nicely with a trip to Macau. Going by land is possible too, but it's a longer trek - better with a halfway stop in Guangzhou.
Zhuhai's quiet coast and ample beaches have garnered it nickname "Chinese Riviera". It's definitely more of a garden city than Hong Kong's other neighbours, with a laid-back quality of life. Little wonder that the taipans from bigger centres keep a holiday home - or two - here.
Hightlights:
The New Yuan Ming palace is a plausible imitation of Beijing's Old Summer Palace. Its mountain back-drop, numerous pagodas, and reflective waterways make for some impressive photo-ops, while nighttime stage shows add a Broadway flair to traditional Chinese dances. Mount Jingshan Park offers a cable car ride to some of the best city views, where the intrepid can ride the tracks down the mountain on a hand-cart. At Seaside Park, the Statue of the Fisher Girl is Zhunhai's answer to Copenhangen's Little Mermaid, and a well-known city landmark.
