Kukup in Malaysia
Kukup, a old fishing village built on stilts over the sea.
Enjoys a leisurely half day drive to the fishing town in south-west Johor to savour fresh seafood caught in nearby waters.
Just over an hour's drive from Tuas Check Point. You can shop for clothes, dried seafood like squid, ikan bilis, scallops and salted fish, as well as local produce such as fish and prawn crackers, tau sar piah (bean paste pastry), durian cake, and preserved fruit.
When durian in the season, stalls are found on Kukup road offering this king of fruits as well as mangosteens, pineapples and bananas.
Take a shorter detour and visit Tanjung Piai. Turn left just before the end of the Kukup road and head for Kampung Serkat and Tanjung Piai. A 15-mins drive will lead you to the Tanjung Piai National Park, home to many bird species and swamp dewellers like snakes, crabs and mudskippers.
For those who love the sea, take a boat ride to Pulau Kukup, a mangrove island just across the ferry terminal or tour the fish farms and kelongs that abound in the area.
Getting There
Take the second link and after the first Malaysian rest stop at Gelang Patah, turn off about 16km farther up north onto the Pontian Highway. From there, follow road sighs to Pontian, passing through Pekan Nenas before reaching Pontian Kecil. At this town, a left turn at the main traffic junction will take you onto the Kukup road.
Traveller Tips
+ Go in the early afternoon so that you have the time to stroll and shop around before dinner. Leave before it get dark as the trunk road is very dimly lit and may pose problems to those who are not used to night driving in Malaysia.
+ Be alert and watch out for animals crossing the road or motorcycles and bicycles cutting into your path.
+When ordering seafood, it best to find out from the restaurant staff what is abundant and therefore not so pricey, for the day and order accordingly.
